1/2 cup tur gram; (toor or toovar dal)
4 pieces raw tamarind; (where seeds are not yet
1 pinch turmeric
1 teaspoon chiili powder
1 stem curry leaves
1 onion
1 tablespoon oil
1 teaspoon peeled broken black gram dal; (urad dal)
1 teaspoon black mustard seeds
1 pinch asafoetida
1 salt; to taste

Directions: How to Cook Tamarind Dal (Chintakai Pappu)

1. Boil the tur gram.

2. Clean the tamarind, grind, remove strands and bits of seeds.

3. Add to the dal. Add half cup water, turmeric, chilli powder, curry leaves and salt, and cook.

4. Chop onion. Add.

5. Remove when the onions arecooked and when the dal is thick.

6. Fry black gram, mustards seeds and asafoetida. Add as seasoning.
